Red light therapy is gaining in popularity it is a non-invasive therapeutic way that helps a range of ailments. From wound healing to helping muscle inflammation, the effects are being seen both in humans and animals with equine red light therapy helping horses all around the world.
But how does red light therapy work and how can red light therapy help to improve equine wounds and injury healing? Let's take a look at this impressive therapy and how it can help your horses.
What is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy is a low-level light therapy within the therapeutic window, it has been shown to penetrate through the layers of the skin and tissue, repairing, renewing, regenerating, and healing any damage. Pain is also alleviated, and inflammation becomes reduced.
The light wavelengths penetrate the body’s tissue at different depths and aid in stimulating the production of mitochondria. This enables the cells to perform faster and much more efficiently, by ultimately speeding up the recovery and healing time.
The light produces endorphins, increases lymphatic drainage and circulation, relaxes muscles, increases antibody and collagen production, and regulates serotonin levels.
While the wavelengths stimulate the mitochondria, they also increase collagen production. Increasing the collagen production in the horse will help rebuild connective tissues damaged from an injury and reduce scarring. LED lights are very safe and they do not cause burns or tissue damage.
What can Red Light Therapy be used for?
Red light therapy is used for many ailments in our horses,
including:
Muscular injuries
Tendon injuries
Bruising/ Wounds
Arthritis
Muscles Recovery
Inflammation
Ligament injuries: soft tissue injuries are common in horses and can be caused by damage or even overuse of the joint/muscle.
Back Pain: Back injuries and back strain are also pretty common for competitive horses. These injuries can be super challenging to treat with traditional medicine because the origin of the pain can sometimes be hard to pinpoint accurately.
Benefits of using Red Light Therapy.
Light therapy has been connected with faster healing time from injuries. It can also be used simultaneously with other treatments during the rehabilitation stage after an injury, surgery, or downtime to help reduce inflammation and repair any damaged tissue.
Our device uses red & infrared light at specific wavelengths which helps with...
Reducing swelling & inflammation
Accelerates the natural healing process
Reduces muscle spasms
Improves blood circulation
Increases lymphatic drainage
Relieves pain
And much more!
Conclusion
If you’re interested in RLT treatment, it’s best to first discuss this with your Equine therapist or Veterinarian. Then, you can work together to discuss treatment options that'll achieve your desired result. Options may or may not include red light therapy. Never hesitate to ask your Equine Therapist about the different therapy options — especially if you have an interest in a particular therapy to see if it’s appropriate to use for your horse's needs and make sure it’s safe and effective.
Horses that are in routine work tend to use the same muscles repeatedly in order for them to perform their job. Because of this, their muscles start to develop tension patterns this is also another reason why it is important to add regular maintenance therapy sessions and another reason why I recommend follow-up sessions.
